It sounds a bit like a fairytale, but it’s true: Serge Scherrer is the winemaking postman of Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie. In the morning, he makes his rounds to deliver the mail, and in the afternoon he works in the vineyards and in the cellar to make exceptional micro cuvées.
Serge grew up in Alsace, and studied winemaking, but wasn’t able to create a domaine from scratch in his home region. He always stayed friends with winemakers in Alsace, notably with Bruno Schueller, an exceptional producer whose wines are rarely seen outside of France. After years of delivering mail in Alsace, then Paris, he transferred to the South and purchased about 4 hectares (10 acres) of old-vine hillside vineyards around Saint-Quentin that nobody else wanted to bother with, but of course produce the small yields of the best fruit around.

100 % Grenache Blanc from 20 year old vines from southwest facing hillside vineyards. Loess clay and sand soils over limestone terroir. Manually harvested. Yield: 25 hl / hectare. Pellicular maceration at cooler temperature during 48 hours. Temperature control (17°C) during alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation completed. Elevage 6 months in steel tank on fine lees. Organic. Production: 2,000 bottles.
IGP Duché d’Uzes Les Toiles
75% Syrah, 15% Grenache Noir, and 10% Cinsault. 30 - 50 year old vines from steep, south facing hillside vineyards between St Quentin and Uzes. Loess clay and sand soils over limestone terroir. Manually harvested. Yield: 20 hl / hectare. Traditional vinification with natural yeasts. 100% destemmed, maceration for 21 days under the marc, punch-down or pump-over daily during maceration. Elevage in steel tank. Organic. Production: 2,666 bottles.

Lœss clay and sand soils over limestone and clay-limestone soils. Manually harvested. Yield: 22hl / hectare. Traditional vinification with natural yeasts. 100% destemmed, maceration for 21 days under the marc, punch-down or pump-over daily during maceration. Elevage in steel tank. Organic. Production: 4,000 bottles.
A rich, big mouthful of a wine for Grenache lovers, but with soul and even a bit of acidity.
